Extending the heritage tram from Wynyard Quarter to Britomart and on to St Heliers would help connect the waterfront and to unlock the economic potential of Wynyard Quarter.
With further extension to St Heliers in a later phase, there are clear opportunities to link
North Wharf and the Viaduct Events Centre, Voyager Maritime Museum and Viaduct Harbour, the Tepid Baths, Britomart, downtown, Queens Wharf (Cloud and public spaces), Parnell Baths, Kelly Tarltons, Bastion Point and Orakai Marae, and the village centres, parks and beaches of Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St Heliers.
The extension would be future-proofed to take light rail as trams run on the same gauge track. This is an option which will be investigated with the opportunity to ensure connectivity with the current and future passenger transport network (at Britomart, other interchanges and any future tram lines along to St Heliers and up Queen Street).
Extending the tram across to Britomart is dependent on a new Wynyard Crossing bridge. A full cost benefit analysis for an extended tram service has not yet been undertaken.
